We have determined that the sale of our businesses maximizes value while preserving innovation platforms, customer relationships and jobs to the greatest extent possible,” said Mike Zafirovski, Nortel President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are advancing in our discussions with interested parties for our other businesses.”

According to Joel Hackney, the president of Enterprise Solutions, by buying Nortel Enterprise, Avaya will gain key clients from Nortel, including USA federal government, as well as technologies and experts of Nortel.

Kevin Kennedy, CEO of Avaya said, “The addition of Nortel Enterprise Solutions will increase Avaya’s global scale, expand our channel partner network, and strengthen our world-class portfolio of products and services. This is a strategic opportunity to acquire talent and complementary assets that position the combined company for growth and success.”

Avaya is the one of the largest enterprise phone and telecommunication system sellers in the world today, used to be the subsidiary of Lucent Technologies and the former AT&T. As far as business scope is concerned, there are some overlaps among Avaya, Nortel Enterprise Solutions and Cisco, which are three rivals in this market. But Avaya is always defeated by Cisco for its scale. This time, the acquisition is certain to reduce the scale gap between Cisco and Avaya.

Insiders predict that this acquisition will be a great blow to the Nortel certification market but a catalyst of the Avaya market. If all goes well, not impossibly, Avaya certifications will be among the top popular certifications not long after, competing with Cisco, Microsoft, etc.

This summer, by devoting 3.2 billion USD to its online meeting software WebEx, Cisco seems to absorb itself into the online office software market that many vendors like Microsoft & Google have participated in.

Doug Dennerline, the Director of Cisco Software Center, told recently that Cisco were considering to add new functions to the WebEx Connect online meeting service, enabling users to create and share files, according to Reuters.

Besides providing relevant features on files, Cisco plans to integrate Jabber enterprise real-time communication function, which was bought last year, with the Call Manager VoIP function.

Also, Cisco may adopt the PostPath technology, also bought last year, to offer mail and events calendar service under the WebEx brand.

It is estimated that the new version of WebEx Connect will be released this summer.

“The WebEx online meeting software is an ideal integrative platform in fact,” said Anders Bylund, the chief writer of The Motley Fool.

It is not a new field for Cisco. WebEx has an excellent online communication and information sharing function. Thus, the online office software integration won’t be a hard task.

Bylund predicts that with GoogleWave or other open platforms, this new version of WebEx might bring overwhelming threat to Microsoft Office software.

Compared to the online service designed by Microsoft, Cisco WebEx is more likely to appeal to these enterprise users.

As to the Cloud Computing, Cisco doesn’t attempt to dominant this market; instead, they are willing to sell servers or routers, to accelerate other companies, according to Padmasree Warrior, the chief technology officer of Cisco.

But Bylund believes that Cisco has recognized its pale influence in this market, and that Cisco made this decision to spare itself from trouble.
